At a glance

Who it’s for: People considering a move to Bolivar Creek or comparing seniors’ living options in Surrey

What it covers: Why leadership matters and what the BC Care Providers Award says about Park Place Seniors Living

Why it matters: The people behind a community shape how it feels to live there every day

Award-winning leadership reflects long-term experience and consistent values, and that has a direct impact on how a seniors community is run.

If you’re considering a move to a community like Bolivar Creek in Surrey, British Columbia one of the most important questions isn’t just about the building: it’s about who the people behind it are – Park Place Seniors Living.

At Park Place Seniors Living, a Canadian-owned seniors living organization, the leadership of this organization was recently recognized when founders Al and Jenny Jina received the Ed Helfrich Long-Service Excellence Award from the BC Care Providers Association.

Al and Jenny’s Leadership and Impact

Those who have worked with Al and Jenny know their leadership is grounded and practical. They unwaveringly focus on doing what is best for residents, families, and care teams, guided by purpose rather than praise or self-recognition.

With a background in nursing, a master’s degree in Adult Education, and a Fellowship in Gerontology, Jenny has spent her entire career caring for seniors. Her early experience instilled the importance of giving seniors dignity and preventing institutionalization of care. This led her to work tirelessly to make Park Place feel like home for all residents. Because of her leadership, Park Place communities are known as warm, person-centred environments that help everyone feel welcome and comfortable to be themselves.

With commerce and law degrees from the University of Alberta, Al has created deep systemic change in seniors’ care. From serving on provincial committees to advising on legislation, his influence has strengthened the foundations of seniors’ care across Canada. Serving on multiple committees over his career, and his contributions have brought important insight to Park Place’s residences.

Over the years, sound decision-making and a clear understanding of what quality care looks like in the real world have shaped both Al and Jenny’s work. Their leadership provides a strong foundation for the entire organization to rely on, enabling us to move forward from a position of strength.

What does this award really say about the team behind Bolivar Creek?

The Ed Helfrich Long-Service Excellence Award is given to individuals who have made a lasting contribution to seniors’ care over many years.

It reflects:

Long-term commitment to the sector

Consistency in leadership

A track record of building and operating communities over time

Al and Jenny Jina have spent more than three decades in seniors living, starting with a single community and growing Park Place into a network across Canada.

This recognition is not about a single achievement; it reflects how they’ve approached their work over time. It’s this approach and hard work ethic that is the backbone of Bolivar Creek, meaning that seniors who reside at this retirement residence in Surrey truly benefit from over three decades of this hard work.

What does this mean for Bolivar Creek?

At Bolivar Creek in Surrey, British Columbia, that same leadership approach carries into the community.

While the community itself is new to the Park Place family, the way it is run is based on decades of experience in seniors living. The focus is on creating a place where residents can maintain independence while feeling supported in their day-to-day routines.

This includes:

A consistent approach to how the community operates

A focus on connection and daily interaction

An environment designed to be easy to live in

For someone considering independent living, this combination can make the transition feel more comfortable.

Why do people look for this kind of experience?

When people begin comparing seniors’ living options, there is often a point where the focus shifts. Instead of asking “what does the building look like?”, deeper, more meaningful questions start to emerge, such as “what will it feel like when I live here?”

Leadership plays a large role in that second question. A community backed by long-term experience often feels more settled and less uncertain over time. With an established set of systems, and operating guidelines, these experiences become well thought-out so that all seniors receive an enriched lifestyle when making the move to Bolivar Creek.

What does this mean for you or your family?

For residents, it often means a more consistent and predictable day-to-day experience.

For families, it can provide reassurance that the community is being managed with care and experience. That confidence tends to come not from one feature, but from how everything works together.

See how this shows up in everyday life

If you’re considering a move to Bolivar Creek Seniors Community in Surrey, it may be worth looking beyond the physical space and asking a simple question: Who is running this community, and how do they approach their work?

At Park Place Seniors Living, recognition like the BC Care Providers Award reflects a long-term approach to seniors living, one that continues to shape both established communities and newer ones.

At a glance

Who it’s for: Seniors and families considering retirement communities in Surrey, BC.

What it covers: Seven common signs it may be time to consider independent living.

Why it matters: Recognizing these signs early can help make the transition smoother and more positive.

It may be time for independent living when daily life starts to feel more difficult, isolating, or overwhelming and when added support, connection, and simplicity would improve overall well-being.

If you’ve been searching for retirement communities near me, you may already be asking an important question: Is it the right time to make a change and move into a Surrey retirement community?

For seniors and older adults, the decision to move into a seniors community is rarely about just one thing. It’s often a combination of small shifts in daily life; things that gradually become harder, more isolating, or less enjoyable.

At Park Place Seniors Living, a Canadian-owned seniors living organization, the focus is on helping residents feel supported, connected, and comfortable in their everyday routines. At Bolivar Creek Retirement Residence in Surrey, BC, independent living is designed to make life simpler, more enjoyable, all while maintaining independence.

1. Are you feeling more isolated than you used to?

If connection takes more effort than it once did, it may be time for a change.

Even in a vibrant city like Surrey with many beautiful parks, events, and community spaces, staying socially connected can become harder over time.

Places like Royal Kwantlen Park and Holland Park offer beautiful spaces to walk and gather, but getting there regularly isn’t always easy.

At Bolivar Creek, connection is built into daily life. Residents don’t have to plan social time; it happens naturally through shared spaces, conversations, and activities. Bolivar Creek also takes care of planning a wide range of social activities every month, from exercise classes, movie nights, to special celebrations. There’s always something fun on the agenda.

Connection becomes part of your routine, not something you personally have to organize.

2. Are household chores starting to feel like a burden?

If maintaining your home feels like constant work, simplifying can make a difference.

Cooking, cleaning, and upkeep can quietly take up more time and energy than expected. Independent living removes many of these responsibilities through services like housekeeping, dining, and transportation.

At Bolivar Creek, residents can focus less on managing a home and more on enjoying each day, every day.

3. Are you ready for a simpler lifestyle?

If you’re looking to reduce stress, independent living offers a more manageable way to live.

Many seniors begin exploring retirement communities closest to them because they want fewer responsibilities and more flexibility.

At Bolivar Creek, suites are designed for comfort and convenience with open layouts, in-suite laundry, and accessible spaces that make daily life easier.

It’s about keeping your independence while letting go of what no longer serves you.

4. Are you missing out on local activities and opportunities?

If you’re not taking advantage of everything Surrey offers, your environment may be holding you back.

Surrey has no shortage of opportunities, from recreation programs to arts, fitness, and cultural events.

There are also community spaces like Clayton Community Centre, which offer fitness facilities, arts programming, and social opportunities all in one place.

At Bolivar Creek, activities, fitness programs, and social events are planned in advance and happen right within the community, making it easier to stay engaged without needing to travel far.

5. Are you thinking more about safety?

If safety concerns are becoming more frequent, it may be time to explore new options.

Living alone can bring uncertainty, especially when it comes to emergencies, health risks, or mobility issues.

Bolivar Creek is designed with accessibility in mind, including easy-to-navigate layouts, elevators, and supportive services available when needed.

This allows residents to maintain independence while feeling more secure.

6. Are daily routines starting to feel more tiring?

If everyday tasks take more energy than they used to, support can make a difference.

Independent living doesn’t replace independence: it supports it.

With meals prepared, housekeeping available, and optional services tailored to individual needs, residents can conserve energy for the things they enjoy most.

7. Are you thinking ahead about what’s next?

If you’re planning for the future, making a move early can make the transition smoother.

Many people begin exploring retirement communities in Surrey not because they have to, but because they want to choose their own terms.

At Bolivar Creek, residents can settle into a lifestyle that supports both current independence and future flexibility, with services that can adjust over time.

The right move is one you make when you’re ready, not when you’re forced.

How do you know when the time is right for independent living?

Choosing independent living isn’t about giving something up; it’s about gaining something new. At Bolivar Creek Retirement Residence in Surrey, British Columbia, residents can simplify daily life while staying connected to their community and the city around them.

There’s rarely one clear moment, but there are often patterns. If several of these signs feel familiar, then we invite you to stop by our five-story retirement community and see what everyday life could look like.

A Community Designed for Independent Living

Bolivar Creek was designed to make getting around the residence comfortable and straightforward. Wide hallways, elevators, and open common areas make it easy to move throughout the building, while floor-to-ceiling windows bring in natural light and views of the surrounding neighbourhood.

Bolivar Creek is proud to be part of Park Place Seniors Living, an organization built on decades of leadership in seniors living.

This February, Al and Jenny Jina, owners and operators of Park Place Seniors Living, were named recipients of the Ed Helfrich Long-Service Excellence Award, presented by the BC Care Providers Association.

Retirement communities are deeply influenced by their leadership. This province-wide recognition reflects decades of steady commitment to seniors living, and that foundation now supports Bolivar Creek.

What the Ed Helfrich Long-Service Excellence Award Represents

The Ed Helfrich Long-Service Excellence Award is a distinguished category within the BC Care Awards. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated longstanding leadership in the seniors’ care sector for 15 years or more.

Presented at the annual BC Care Awards ceremony, which was attended by elected officials, sector leaders, and the Minister of Health, this honour reflects peer recognition across British Columbia. It acknowledges sustained contributions, thoughtful leadership, and meaningful impact over time.

This achievement reflects a career dedicated to enhancing seniors living in this province.

The Leadership Behind Park Place Seniors Living

Al and Jenny Jina have built Park Place Seniors Living together over decades of involvement in the seniors living sector.

Jenny’s background in nursing, along with a Master’s degree in Adult Education and a Fellowship in Gerontology, has grounded the organization in a deep understanding of seniors’ wellbeing. Early in her career, she recognized the importance of preserving dignity and creating environments that feel welcoming and respectful. That perspective continues to influence how Park Place communities operate, with attention to warmth, autonomy, and a sense of home.

Al brings expertise in commerce and law, as well as extensive service on provincial committees and advisory roles related to seniors’ care. His experience at the governance and policy level has strengthened operational standards, long-term planning, and organizational accountability across the organization.

Together, their leadership blends practical experience with strategic oversight. It reflects both an understanding of daily life in seniors communities and what it takes to run them well over the long term.

What This Means for Bolivar Creek

Bolivar Creek is a valued part of Park Place Seniors Living. While the community continues to grow within Surrey, it is guided by leadership built over decades of experience.

That experience influences how the community runs day to day, from staffing and communication to the overall atmosphere. Independent living communities benefit from strong leadership in practical ways: clear communication, consistent standards, thoughtful decision-making, and a steady organizational foundation.

For those considering a senior community in Surrey, it’s reassuring to understand who the leadership is behind the community. Bolivar Creek is a part of a larger organization with deep roots in British Columbia and a long-standing commitment to seniors.

Being Canadian-owned and operated also means decisions are made with local context in mind. The leadership team has a unique understanding of the communities they serve and the families who live here.

Leadership Reflected in Everyday Life

Awards recognize achievements, but leadership is most visible in everyday details.

It shows up in how teams collaborate, how questions are answered, and how consistently standards are applied across residences. It appears in the systems that support residents, the expectations placed on teams, and the culture that develops over time.

At Bolivar Creek, that steady leadership creates an environment where independent living feels organized, welcoming, and well-supported. Residents keep their routines and privacy, supported by a team with years of experience.

For families, that consistency fosters confidence. Provincial recognition gives families added confidence in the organization behind the community.

A Recognition That Extends Beyond One Evening

The excellence award was presented at the 12th annual BC Care Awards ceremony at the Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC. While the event itself marked an important milestone, the recognition reflects decades of work that continue today.

As Bolivar Creek grows within the Surrey community, it does so under leadership that has been acknowledged by peers across the province for long-term excellence.

If you are exploring independent living in Surrey and would like to learn more about Bolivar Creek, we invite you to book a tour. Seeing the community firsthand and understanding the leadership behind it offers a clear picture of the foundation guiding this next chapter.

Independent Living in Surrey: What Life at Bolivar Creek Is Really Like

Families exploring independent living in Surrey often want a clearer sense of what everyday life actually feels like.

Bolivar Creek Retirement Residence is located just north of Surrey City Centre, within an established residential neighbourhood that’s close to transit, shops, and daily essentials. It’s connected to the downtown core, yet it still feels tucked into its own pocket of the community. Close to everything, without being in the middle of it.

Surrey City Centre has long been the downtown heart of the region. When the Pattullo Bridge opened in 1939, it strengthened connections across the Fraser River and brought more movement into the area. Over the decades, transit expansion and thoughtful development continued to shape its role as a central hub.

Bolivar Creek sits slightly north of the busiest corridors in Surrey, within a community of single-family homes and tree-lined streets. The SkyTrain is nearby. Shops, services, and medical offices are within easy reach, and Surrey Memorial Hospital is only a short drive away. There are parks and green spaces close by as well.

Residents remain connected to the wider city within a neighbourhood that feels safe, calm, and familiar.

Inside Bolivar Creek

Bolivar Creek opened in 2021 as a five-storey independent living residence designed to make daily life easier and more enjoyable for seniors.

Wide hallways and elevators allow residents to move comfortably through the building, while open common areas invite conversation and casual gatherings. Floor-to-ceiling windows bring in natural light throughout the day, creating bright, welcoming spaces where family and friends can sit and visit.

Life here is active. Residents have hobbies, appointments, volunteer commitments, family visits, and routines they’ve maintained for years. Independent living gives seniors the opportunity to spend their time doing the things they enjoy, rather than worrying about chores and maintaining a house.

At Bolivar Creek, housekeeping is included and we take care of all of the maintenance work. Dining is flexible and restaurant-style, and a credit system allows residents to choose when and how they eat, whether that’s a quiet breakfast or dinner with neighbours. Our culinary team prepares fresh, comforting meals each day, and residents can also cook their own meals in their suites if they like. Through the resident food committee, preferences help guide the menu, so meals feel familiar and personal. And that shift from “I have to take care of everything on my own” to “someone else can handle the things I don’t want to do anymore” opens up time for the things that matter most.

Family remains central here. Large gathering spaces and a private dining room make it easy to host celebrations, birthdays, and weekend meals. Grandchildren love coming to visit and friends often drop by. It’s a welcoming place to spend time with loved ones.

Everyday Moments

Community life at Bolivar Creek feels relaxed and social, without the pressure.

This month, residents gathered for Valentine’s dinner and desserts prepared by our culinary team, with roses placed at each setting. Earlier in the month, neighbours settled into the lounge to watch the Super Bowl together, sharing snacks and cheering for their favourite teams together.

We also had a painting session led by a local art instructor, where creativity took centre stage. Our monthly sound bath meditation session offers residents a chance to slow down and recharge.

Gardening remains a favourite pastime for many who enjoy tending flowers and spending time outdoors. As one resident shares, “I do all my planting, and I have my roses and things I look after in the garden.” Simple routines like caring for plants, spending time outside, and watching the seasons change are part of what make daily life here feel grounded and familiar.

Some residents fill their calendars with activities, while others prefer a quieter rhythm and join in occasionally. The atmosphere is welcoming, never overwhelming. Participation is always a choice.

A Community That Reflects Surrey

Surrey is one of the most diverse cities in British Columbia, and Bolivar Creek reflects that richness. The residence welcomes seniors from many cultural backgrounds. Traditions are respected, and food preferences are considered thoughtfully. Celebrations feel personal rather than generic.

For many families in Surrey, staying close to home and maintaining cultural connections matters deeply. Bolivar Creek offers that proximity. Family members can visit easily, and familiar neighbourhoods remain part of daily life.

Independent living here means staying engaged with the life you already know, simply with fewer daily demands.

Location and Independence

Location plays a meaningful role in everyday routine. Transit access makes outings simple. Shops, services, medical offices, and the hospital are all easily accessible. Family members who live in Surrey or surrounding communities can stop in without planning an entire day around the visit.

Convenience supports independence; it makes life feel easier and more flexible.

A Neighbourhood With History

Some of our residents have watched this area grow for decades. They’ve seen new development, new transit lines, and new generations move in.

One resident recalls, “When we moved here in 1962, you couldn’t even afford to buy a house in this area.” That long-term perspective reflects just how much the neighbourhood has evolved and how deeply rooted many residents feel here.

Neighbourhoods grow and adapt. They welcome change while still feeling familiar to the people who call them home.

Surrey City Centre continues to evolve, and Bolivar Creek remains part of that steady progress. Close to the energy of the city, yet grounded in its residential setting.

Everyday Life, Your Way

Life at Bolivar Creek is active, social, and grounded in routine.

It’s a place for independent seniors who want fewer daily responsibilities and more time for hobbies, friendships, family, and rest. It’s for those who value flexibility, cultural connection, and the freedom to decide how each day unfolds.

If you’re exploring retirement home options in Surrey and looking for a seniors community that supports independence and connection, we invite you to visit Bolivar Creek.

As one resident simply puts it, “You really have to experience it to understand it.”

We invite you to visit Bolivar Creek, spend time in the lounge, enjoy a meal, and see what everyday life feels like here.

The Power of Giving Back: A Tribute to Our Volunteers

At Bolivar Creek in Surrey, we know that it takes more than buildings and programs to create a true community, it takes people. Among the most cherished members of our community are our volunteers. Their enthusiasm, kindness, and dedication bring a unique energy that enriches daily life for residents and ease the load for staff.

This month, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on one of our wonderful volunteers: Barb.

Barb’s Story

Barb has been lending her time and talents to Devonshire Seniors Community for many years, and she embodies the spirit of service that makes our volunteer program so special. Every Thursday afternoon, you’ll find her helping wherever she’s needed. Whether it’s assisting with an activity, lending a hand at large events, or simply offering a listening ear, Barb shows up with warmth and empathy.

What makes Barb’s contribution so remarkable is not only her willingness to pitch in, but also her ability to anticipate the needs of residents. With intuition and compassion, she responds in ways that make people feel seen and supported. For our staff, her presence brings welcome relief during busy times. For our residents, her generosity brings comfort, companionship, and joy.

Barb’s story is just one example of the many volunteers who make a difference in our Park Place community’s life.

The Impact of Volunteers

Volunteers play a vital role in the rhythm of daily life at Bolivar Creek. They help bring celebrations to life, brighten afternoons with games or music, and create moments of connection that truly matter. Their efforts don’t just fill a schedule, they add heart to everyday routines, transforming an ordinary day into something meaningful.

Volunteering also benefits those who give their time. Many volunteers say they gain a deep sense of purpose, build lasting friendships, and enjoy the fulfillment that comes from making a positive difference. It’s a two-way exchange: residents feel supported, and volunteers feel enriched.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, there are countless ways to get involved. At Bolivar Creek, we’re always looking for volunteers to support:

Recreational activities and games

Celebration events

Pet therapy and music therapy

Reading with residents

Outings and shopping trips

Social visits and companionship

And if you have a special skill or talent not on this list, we’d love to hear from you. Every contribution, big or small, helps bring joy and comfort to our residents.

Join Us

Volunteers like Barb remind us of the incredible impact one person can have. Their kindness strengthens our community, supports our staff, and most importantly, enhances the quality of life for residents.

Now is a great time to start volunteering! Get in touch with us to learn more about opportunities near you. Together, we can continue building communities where everyone feels connected, valued, and cared for.

At Bolivar Creek in Surrey, mealtimes are a chance to connect, celebrate traditions, and share the simple joys of life. Summer often means enjoying the fresh flavours of the season — from garden vegetables and local berries to cool drinks and outdoor picnics. Residents love gathering for summer socials, family barbecues, and patio lunches, where food becomes a natural way to celebrate the sunshine and each other’s company. Many of our residents also bring with them years of cooking experience, family favourites, and cherished recipes that carry special memories.

This summer, we’re excited to feature one of those recipes from Nadine, a resident in one of our Park Place communities. Nadine loves baking, and her Orange Cranberry Cookies have become a treat she’s proud to share. Bursting with citrus flavour and finished with a drizzle of white chocolate, they’re the perfect combination of refreshing and indulgent — just right for a summer gathering.

Nadine’s Orange Cranberry Cookies

Ingredients

1 ½ cups salted butter

1 cup granulated sugar

½ tsp almond extract

2 ½ cups flour

2 Tbsp cornstarch

2 Tbsp orange zest

1 cup dried cranberries, finely chopped

2 ounces white chocolate

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Cream butter and sugar together, then mix in almond extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and cornstarch. Add to the butter mixture and blend well.

Stir in orange zest and cranberries.

On a floured board, roll dough to about ¼ inch thick and cut out cookies with a cookie cutter. Alternatively, roll dough into a log and slice into ¼ inch rounds.

Bake at 325°F for 12 minutes.

Allow cookies to cool completely before drizzling with melted white chocolate.

A Few Pro Tips

Chill the dough – For cleaner slices or sharper cookie-cutter shapes, chill the dough for 30 minutes before cutting and baking.

Try different shapes – Use seasonal cookie cutters (flowers, suns, stars) to make them festive for summer gatherings.

Play with textures – Leave some cranberries more roughly chopped for a chewier bite.

Make ahead – Roll the dough into a log and freeze it. When you’re ready to bake, just slice and pop them in the oven.

Gift idea – Stack a few cookies in a clear bag tied with ribbon, which is perfect for sharing with neighbours or family.

The Joy of Sharing Recipes

For Nadine, baking is more than a hobby — it’s a way to bring people together. Whether she’s preparing cookies for friends, enjoying an afternoon tea, or sharing her recipe, her love of baking adds warmth and joy to everyday life. Recipes like hers often spark memories of childhood kitchens, holiday traditions, or time spent cooking with loved ones. Passing them along keeps those traditions alive while giving them new life among neighbours and friends.

Food has a special way of opening the door to conversation. A plate of cookies might lead to a story about growing up, a memory of family gatherings, or even a friendly exchange of baking tips. These small gestures of care create opportunities for laughter, connection, and comfort, turning an ordinary afternoon into something truly memorable.

Food, Wellness, and Connection

Cooking and baking are tasty pastimes, and they also provide opportunities for creativity, sensory stimulation, and social interaction. For residents, the simple act of making or sharing a dish can be uplifting, purposeful, and deeply rewarding. A favourite family recipe can spark memories and conversations, while trying something new can bring a sense of discovery. At Bolivar Creek, we encourage residents to share their favourite dishes with friends and neighbours, whether by swapping recipes, baking together in small groups, or bringing a plate of treats to a community gathering. These moments of sharing turn everyday meals into occasions that celebrate connection, tradition, and joy.

Try It at Home

We invite you to try Nadine’s Orange Cranberry Cookies in your own kitchen this summer. They’re perfect for family picnics, neighbourhood potlucks, or simply enjoying with a cup of tea on a sunny afternoon.

At Bolivar Creek, residents continue to inspire us with their creativity and care for one another. If you’d like to learn more about life at Bolivar Creek in Surrey, we invite you to book a tour with us. Together, we can celebrate the everyday moments that make community life so special.

Turning Pages, Opening Doors: How Local Libraries Support Enrichment in Retirement

At Bolivar Creek, we believe that learning doesn’t stop as you age—it simply evolves. In fact, staying curious and engaged is one of the most fulfilling parts of retirement. That’s why we’re proud to partner with local libraries to bring enrichment, education, and a love of lifelong learning right into our senior community in Surrey.

Whether you’re a devoted bookworm, someone who loves attending talks and performances, or you’re simply interested in trying something new, your local library holds a world of possibility, right at your fingertips.

More Than Books: A Hub for Connection

Libraries today are more than shelves of books. They’re dynamic, inclusive community spaces that support connection, creativity, and exploration. From large-print novels and audiobooks to live author events and cultural programs, the modern library offers something for everyone.

And in a retirement home in Surrey, these offerings become even more powerful when paired with staff support, social opportunities, and easy access. Our goal is to help you enjoy the benefits of your local library in ways that are meaningful, accessible, and inspiring—no matter your interests or mobility level.

Ways We Engage With Local Libraries

Together with our local library partners, we help bring enriching experiences to residents through a variety of programs and resources. Some of these opportunities include:

Book Clubs and Reading Circles

Whether it’s a classic mystery, historical fiction, or a cosy Canadian novel, book clubs are a great way to spark conversation and connection. Reading together encourages reflection, discussion, and the joy of seeing a story through someone else’s eyes. Our staff can help coordinate group materials through the library and support lively, inclusive discussions.

Author Talks and Community Events

Libraries often host events featuring local authors, historians, artists, or guest speakers. We help you stay informed about upcoming events and make it easy to attend—whether that means streaming a virtual session in a shared lounge or helping you RSVP to an in-person event. You get to enjoy thoughtful conversations and fresh perspectives, without the stress of planning or logistics.

Digital Access and Tech Support

Prefer to read on a tablet or listen to books while you relax? Many libraries now offer eBooks, audiobooks, and streaming content you can access anytime. Our team is happy to help you navigate library websites, download apps like Libby or Hoopla, and explore digital offerings with confidence—even if you’re new to the tech side of things.

Creative Writing and Memoir Groups

If you’ve ever thought about putting pen to paper, now’s your chance. Whether you’re interested in journaling, storytelling, poetry, or writing your memoirs, the library is a wonderful resource for prompts, workshops, and inspiration. We encourage residents to explore this creative outlet as a way to reflect, share, and celebrate life experiences.

Educational and Cultural Programs

Many libraries offer enriching content that taps into a variety of interests, from online history lectures and language learning tools to cultural celebrations and art exhibits. Our team helps you stay in the loop and connects you to events or materials that align with your passions. Want to learn Italian, explore genealogy, or join a virtual travel presentation? We’ll help make it happen.

Making It Easy and Enjoyable

We know that getting the most out of your library experience isn’t just about what’s offered, it’s also about how easily you can access it. That’s why we’re here to support you every step of the way.

At Surrey, we can:

Help you apply for or renew a library card

Assist with navigating library websites or mobile apps

Coordinate shared outings to the local library branch

Host visits from library representatives or organise on-site pop-up book selections

Whether you’re revisiting a favourite author from your youth, catching up on local history, or diving into a new hobby with the help of a how-to guide, we’ll ensure the experience is smooth, comfortable, and enjoyable.

A Life of Curiosity and Connection

We believe that every chapter of life should include opportunities for growth, creativity, and connection. Through our partnership with local libraries, we help bring the outside world in—offering access to stories, experiences, and ideas that inspire joy and lifelong learning.

At our senior community in Surrey, you’ll find not only great reads and engaging events, but a team that supports your interests and encourages you to keep exploring.

Book a tour today to discover how life at Bolivar Creek supports enrichment, creativity, and connection.

Your Passport to the World, Right Here at Home

At Bolivar Creek, we believe curiosity doesn’t retire. You might not be booking international flights these days, but that doesn’t mean the thrill of discovery is out of reach. Whether you’re passionate about culture, food, art, or history, there are so many ways to explore the world—without ever leaving your retirement community in Surrey.

From vibrant local festivals to a good book set in Paris, your daily life can be filled with new experiences and global flavour. Here are some simple and meaningful ways to embrace a sense of adventure from the comfort of home.

1. Feed Your Curiosity With Books, Blogs, and Documentaries

Reading is one of the easiest ways to explore new places—and it doesn’t require anything more than a comfortable chair and a curious spirit. Travel memoirs, historical fiction, and books set in faraway places can transport you to other countries and cultures without leaving your suite.

Prefer something visual? There are plenty of blogs, YouTube channels, and travel documentaries available online that showcase everything from street food in Thailand to nature trails in Ireland. If you need a little help navigating a tablet or smart TV, just ask a staff member—our team is always happy to lend a hand.

Not sure where to begin? Try exploring:

A BBC documentary about life in Japan

A travel blog featuring markets in Morocco

A novel set in rural Italy or the Australian outback

2. Taste the Flavours of Faraway Places

Nothing brings a culture to life quite like its cuisine. Trying new dishes is a delicious way to learn about the world, and it’s something you can do whether you’re dining with friends or enjoying a quiet lunch in your suite.

At Bolivar Creek we often find creative ways to add global flavours to our menus. But you can also take things a step further by:

Ordering takeout from a local international restaurant

Hosting a small potluck with global recipes

Trying a new spice or ingredient in your own cooking

Sharing your favourite traditional family recipe with the community

Even a small twist—like switching up your usual Earl Grey tea for matcha or trying a sweet Mexican pastry—can help you appreciate another culture.

3. Celebrate Stories and Memories

One of the greatest parts of living in a senior community in Surrey is being surrounded by people with rich, unique stories. Maybe you travelled the world in your younger years. Maybe you have cultural traditions passed down through generations. Or maybe you’ve always dreamed of visiting a particular country.

Whatever your story, we encourage you to share it.

Talk about the time you rode a gondola in Venice or tried your first curry in London. Bring out an old photo album, a treasured souvenir, or a recipe card from your grandmother’s kitchen. These stories help us connect—and they make the world feel a little smaller and warmer.

4. Create With a Global Perspective

You don’t need to be an artist to explore culture through creativity. Trying a new craft is a wonderful way to experience a new place.

Some easy and fun ideas include:

Painting a landscape inspired by a dream destination

Learning how to fold origami

Colouring mandalas

Creating a memory collage of places you’ve been (or want to go)

These activities are about play and imagination—not perfection. It’s all about the joy of trying something new.

5. Discover Local Culture With a Global Feel

Exploring the world doesn’t always mean looking far away. You might be surprised by what’s happening right in Surrey. Many communities host multicultural festivals, art exhibits, food markets, or live performances that celebrate diverse cultures from around the globe.

Check your community board, ask family members to help find local events, or ask a team member to help you look online for something that interests you. You might discover:

A cultural performance or dance class nearby

A themed cooking demo in your community

A visiting speaker or musician from another part of the world

Some events are even streamed online, so you can attend virtually from your favourite armchair.

6. Make it Social

Exploring the world is even more fun when it’s shared. Why not invite a friend to join you for a movie night featuring an international film? Or start a monthly “culture club” where you pick a new country to learn about together?

These shared moments not only deepen your knowledge, they also build community and friendship.

The World Is Still Yours to Discover

At Bolivar Creek, we know that adventure doesn’t end when you stop travelling. It just changes shape. With a little creativity, a willingness to explore, and the support of your senior community in Surrey, you can continue to experience the richness of the world every single day.

So pick up that new book. Try the dish you’ve never had before. Watch a film with subtitles. The world is waiting, and you don’t have to go far to find it.

Step Outside: Low-Impact Outdoor Activities to Boost Health and Connection

There’s something special about summertime – when the air feels lighter, the days are longer, and even the smallest moments outdoors can lift your spirits. Whether you’re listening to the breeze move through the trees or catching up with friends on a sunny patio, spending time outside has a way of bringing joy, energy, and a renewed sense of connection.

At Bolivar Creek, a trusted retirement home in Surrey, we believe fresh air and gentle movement should be part of everyday life. You don’t have to hike a mountain or break a sweat to feel the benefits. Just stepping outside for a walk, a chat, or a stretch can make all the difference. That’s why our community is thoughtfully designed to support easy, meaningful ways to stay active and social, all summer long.

The Benefits of Outdoor Activity for Older Adults

Spending time in nature isn’t just enjoyable, it’s good for your health. Outdoor activity can improve circulation, support better sleep, and lift your mood. And when you pair that movement with time spent in good company, the benefits grow even stronger.

As a Senior Community in Surrey, we understand how important connection is. Getting outside together builds routine, deepens friendships, and creates shared experiences that make daily life more fulfilling. Whether you’re walking with neighbours or chatting in the garden, every moment outdoors contributes to your physical and emotional well-being.

Walking Clubs: Steps Toward Connection

Our walking clubs are one of the most popular ways residents stay active and connected. These gentle strolls take place on accessible community paths and nearby green spaces, offering a safe and social way to enjoy the outdoors.

Whether led by staff or fellow residents, the pace is always tailored to comfort levels. You can enjoy a brisk walk or take it slow and soak in the view – either way, you’ll benefit from the movement and the meaningful conversations along the way. It’s just one of the many ways our retirement home in Surrey makes wellness feel natural and inviting.

Birdwatching and Nature Observation

Not all outdoor activities require movement. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, birdwatching and nature observation offer a peaceful, rewarding alternative. With gardens, patios, and shaded courtyards throughout our grounds, there are plenty of quiet spots to pause, observe, and reflect.

You might bring binoculars, keep a nature journal, or simply sit and enjoy the breeze. It’s peaceful, rewarding, and easy to begin. At our Surrey senior community, we encourage residents to savour these simple moments that ground us in the beauty of the season.

Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, and Outdoor Stretching

Outdoor fitness doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. Our summer wellness sessions, including Tai Chi, chair yoga, and gentle stretching, are designed to help you stay strong, balanced, and flexible without strain.

These classes are held in shaded outdoor spaces during cooler parts of the day, creating a calming atmosphere that’s as good for your mind as it is for your body. Guided by trained instructors or experienced staff, the sessions are supportive, adaptable, and focused on feeling good in your body, wherever you’re starting from. This is just another way we support whole-person wellness.

Gardening Together

Gardening is more than just a hobby, it’s a way to engage your senses, nurture growth, and share knowledge with others. Our raised beds and container planters make it easy for residents to enjoy gardening without needing to kneel or bend.

From planting herbs to arranging seasonal blooms, gardening offers quiet satisfaction and the joy of seeing something flourish under your care. It’s a favourite summer activity for many residents and a beautiful way to connect across generations – especially when visiting grandkids get involved!

Local Outings for Fresh Air and Fun

Not all outdoor moments happen at home. We also support flexible, self-directed outings that let residents explore the local area with friends or family. Whether it’s a stroll through a nearby park, a visit to the farmers market, or a spontaneous ice cream outing, these simple excursions bring variety and fun to your routine.

Because we’re a senior community in Surrey, we’re perfectly positioned for easy access to beautiful parks and local amenities. Residents are welcome to plan their own outings or ask our team for suggestions, whatever helps them enjoy the season in their own way.

Making Outdoor Time Part of Daily Life

We believe the best moments are often the simplest. That’s why our community layout is designed to encourage spontaneous outdoor time, whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea on a shaded bench or taking a quiet stroll after lunch.

Our grounds are safe, accessible, and welcoming. And while residents are always free to enjoy their independence, our staff is close by and happy to assist whenever needed. Sometimes the best moments are unplanned, just step outside and enjoy.

Discover Life at Bolivar Creek

Summer is a time for slowing down, enjoying the sunshine, and reconnecting with what matters most. At Bolivar Creek, we make it easy for residents to stay active, social, and surrounded by the beauty of nature, all at their own pace.

If you’re exploring options for yourself or a loved one, we invite you to book a tour and experience our welcoming community firsthand. From daily routines to spontaneous moments, everything here is designed to help you enjoy life, one sunny day at a time.
