Choosing a senior living community is not a small decision. For many families in Surrey, it comes after weeks or months of conversations, worry, and research. What often tips the scale is not a floor plan or a list of amenities. It is the people.
Brian Browne is the General Manager at Bolivar Creek Seniors Living in Surrey, BC, part of Park Place Seniors Living, a Canadian-owned and operated organization that has been enriching the lives of seniors since 1993. Brian recently shared insights about his path to seniors living, what families can expect when they walk through the door, and why he believes this community is the right place to call home.
A career built around people
Brian’s background spans leadership roles where relationships were always at the centre. Before coming to Bolivar Creek, he worked in environments where building strong teams and creating positive experiences really mattered.
“I have always believed that the smallest interactions, like remembering someone’s name or stopping for a conversation, can make the biggest difference,” Brian says.
Seniors living was not part of his original plan. But once he stepped into the field, it immediately felt meaningful in a way that was different from anything he had done before. Early on, he remembers a resident thanking him simply for taking the time to sit and listen.
“That moment stuck with me. What keeps me here is knowing that the work we do genuinely impacts people’s quality of life every single day.”
What families can expect when they visit
When families come to tour Bolivar Creek, Brian often hears a version of the same comment: it feels like home.
“There is a sincerity here that is hard to describe until you experience it. I remember one family telling me during a tour that it ‘felt like home’ within minutes, and that really stuck with me. Our team truly cares, and that shows in the way residents are greeted, supported, and included every day.”
That sincerity is something Brian works hard to protect. He is not managing from a distance. His days are a mix of supporting the team, connecting with residents, and making sure the community runs smoothly. One of his favourite parts of the day is walking through the building and checking in.
“Sometimes those quick chats turn into longer conversations or even a laugh shared over coffee. It keeps me grounded and connected to what really matters here.”
For families visiting a senior living community for the first time, that kind of presence from leadership is often reassuring. It tells you something about the culture of a place.
What happens behind the scenes
Brian is quick to credit his team for much of what makes Bolivar Creek feel the way it does. A lot of the care that goes into this community, he says, happens where families do not always see it.
“There is a lot of thoughtful effort happening behind the scenes, whether it is adjusting routines for a resident’s preference or quietly supporting someone who is having a tough day. I have seen team members go out of their way to celebrate a birthday or check in on someone who has not been themselves. Those behind-the-scenes moments are what truly define our culture.”
Residents often describe the atmosphere at Bolivar Creek as warm and genuinely social. You might see two neighbours stop in the hallway just to chat, or someone invite a new resident to join them for lunch. There is a real sense that people look out for one another, which creates a feeling of comfort and belonging that families in Surrey tell us they did not expect to find so quickly.
What Brian wishes more families knew
One of the things Brian hears most often from families is that they waited longer than they should have to begin the process. He understands why. The idea of moving a loved one into a senior living community can feel like a difficult step, even when it is clearly the right one.
“I wish more families understood that this move is often about gaining more freedom and support, not losing independence. I have had conversations with residents who were hesitant at first, only to later tell me they wish they had made the move sooner. Starting early, before it feels urgent, can really change the experience for everyone involved.”
That perspective, he says, is something the team at Bolivar Creek tries to bring into every conversation with families, whether they are ready to move or simply starting to explore their options.
A moment that stays with him
When asked about a moment that reminded him why this work matters, Brian does not hesitate.
He tells the story of a resident who initially kept to themselves after moving in. Over time, Brian watched them slowly start joining activities and forming friendships. Eventually, the resident told him they felt like themselves again.
“Seeing that kind of transformation is incredibly powerful and reminds me why this work is so meaningful.”
He also thinks about the connections that happen every day between residents, the small moments of belonging that build over time.
“One resident shared with me that they had not laughed that much in years until they moved in, which really reinforced what community can do. It confirms that when people feel comfortable and supported, they thrive.”
